Physical therapy and podiatry work hand in hand at Brighton Foot & Ankle to help patients recover from foot and ankle injuries, avoid surgery, and get back to doing what they love.

How Physical Therapy and Podiatry Work Together

Dr. Castelein regularly refers patients to physical therapy as part of a comprehensive treatment plan. While podiatry focuses on diagnosing and treating conditions of the foot and ankle, physical therapy addresses the surrounding muscles, flexibility, strength, and movement patterns that contribute to pain and injury. Together, the two disciplines cover far more ground than either one alone.

Physical therapist Ryan Mertz, who works closely with Brighton Foot & Ankle patients, describes physical therapy as a collaborative coaching process. The goal isn’t just to treat the area that hurts, but to understand everything contributing to the pain, including how someone moves, their strength and flexibility, their daily habits, and their personal goals.

What to Expect from Physical Therapy

When a patient is referred to physical therapy, they can expect a thorough evaluation that looks beyond the foot and ankle to the surrounding structures. Treatment plans are personalized and may include hands-on techniques like massage, dry needling, scraping, and cupping, alongside active exercises focused on improving range of motion, strength, and balance.

Progress is always the goal, not perfection. Whether someone is trying to get back to playing soccer or simply wants to walk around the block without pain, the program is built around what matters most to that individual patient.

When Is Physical Therapy Recommended?

Dr. Castelein commonly recommends physical therapy for conditions including plantar fasciitis, Achilles tendonitis, ankle arthritis, and post-surgical recovery. It’s also used proactively to help athletes stay healthy and prevent injuries from developing in the first place.
