A stress fracture is a small crack or severe bruising in a bone caused by repetitive force and overuse rather than a single traumatic injury. In the foot and ankle, stress fractures are one of the most common overuse injuries — especially among runners, athletes, and people who have recently increased their activity level. They can be easy to dismiss as general soreness, but left untreated a stress fracture can worsen significantly and lead to a complete break. At Brighton Foot & Ankle, Dr. Castelein provides fast accurate diagnosis and personalized treatment to get you back on your feet safely.
What Is a Stress Fracture:
Unlike a typical fracture caused by a sudden impact, a stress fracture develops gradually from repeated stress on the bone over time. The muscles surrounding the bone fatigue and become less able to absorb shock, transferring more force directly to the bone until a small crack forms. In the foot, stress fractures most commonly occur in the metatarsal bones — the long bones running from the midfoot to the toes — as well as the heel bone, navicular, and sesamoid bones. The second and third metatarsals are the most frequently affected.
