Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) Injections

What is PRP and Where Does it Come From?

Plasma is the clear fluid that carries cellular elements around the body and is filled with proteins allowing your body to make new cells. Platelet-rich plasma is made of concentrated plasma and has higher levels of platelets and proteins than normal plasma. PRP injections are an alternative to traditional treatments such as surgery or corticosteroid injections, which can have differing side effects and longer recovery periods.

PRP injections increase cell signaling within the body to help  initiate and regulate the healing and regenerative responses. PRP contains a concentrated amount of platelets, growth factors, cytokines and chemokines, which act as signaling molecules. When PRP is injected into an injured or damaged area, the platelets within the PRP are activated, releasing their stored growth factors and signaling molecules. These molecules then interact with the nearby cells and tissues, binding to specific receptors on the surface of target cells. This binding initiates a series of intracellular pathways, which trigger a cascade of biochemical reactions within the cells increasing the healing rate and reducing inflammation.

The signaling pathways activated by the growth factors and signaling molecules in PRP have several positive effects:

Cell Proliferation: Certain growth factors in PRP, like platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF) stimulate cell division, leading to increased cell numbers at the site of injury. This is essential for tissue repair and regeneration in the foot and ankle.

Cell Migration: PRP’s signaling molecules have the ability to attract and guide cells to the injured area which facilitates healing and regeneration in the foot and ankle.

Angiogenesis: Growth factors found in PRP stimulate the formation of new blood vessels (angiogenesis), ensuring that the injured area receives sufficient oxygen and nutrients for healing in the foot and ankle.

Modulation of Inflammation: Cytokines and chemokines within PRP help regulate the immune response at the injury site, reducing excessive inflammation and promoting a more controlled healing process.

Extracellular Matrix Production: PRP stimulates the production of collagen and other extracellular matrix proteins. Collagen and proteins form the structural framework necessary for tissue repair and the formation of new tissue in the foot and ankle.

What Can PRP Injections be Used For?

Dr. Castelein offers PRP injections into the foot and ankle to treat a variety of foot and ankle conditions, including plantar fasciitis, achilles tendonitis, and osteoarthritis. The injections are placed into the inflamed plantar fascia, achilles tendon or the affected joint, reducing inflammation via your body’s own materials.

What are the benefits and advantages of PRP Injections?

A significant advantage of PRP injections is that they are a minimally invasive treatment option that can be performed on an outpatient basis utilizing the same materials, methods and devices used in local hospitals. Patients typically experience little to no downtime and can resume their regular activities shortly. However, PRP injections may not be appropriate for everyone or effective for all conditions. Dr. Castelein is able to diagnose and determine if PRP injections are the right treatment option for your specific condition.

Brighton Foot and Ankle’s Process

Dr. Castelein begins this process by taking a small sample of your blood, which is then spun in a centrifuge to separate the platelets and other growth factors. The resulting solution is highly concentrated with your blood’s own healing factors. This concentrated solution is then injected into the affected area to stimulate healing and reduce inflammation.

PRP injections have been shown to be effective in treating a variety of conditions including plantar fasciitis, achilles tendonitis and ligament sprains. Dr. Castelein and his team have extensive experience with PRP injections and provide patients with personalized treatment plans that are tailored to their individual needs and healing goals.

By harnessing the power of cell signaling, PRP injections in the foot and ankle offer an all-natural approach to healing that addresses the root cause, providing patients with a safe and effective alternative to traditional treatments.
